Postal Service advertises for UPS
No, not that Postal Service, this Postal Service. You may remember the hoorah that developed a few years back when Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard started collaborating with Dntel’s Jimmy Tamborello by sending CDs back and forth to each other via the mail. They eventually started making commercial recordings under the name “The Postal Service”. This provoked a cease and desist letter from the government agency of the same name. In time the two sides came to an unlikely agreement- The USPS would license the name to the group in return for a little publicity work, which included providing the entertainment at the USPS’s 2004 National Executive Conference.
So it was a bit of a surprise to learn this week that the group’s song “Such Great Heights” serves as the background music for a UPS commercial. (Especially when you realize that the CD is actually availableĀ at the USPS’s online store!)
