More money than common sense- another wrong way mailbox story
We told you in December about the couple in Illinois who were trying to get their Postmaster fired because they’d been told their mailbox was on the wrong side of the road. Apparently when you spend $900 on a brick mailbox, you don’t want to be told it’s on the wrong place. The best part of the story was the punch line- the jokers with the fancy mailbox are former postal workers.
Well now we can go the Manhattanites one better- here’s a couple in yet another tacky yet overpriced subdivision who were just so proud of having spent $1,200 on their mailbox! And then they got the bad news- yup, wrong side of the street.

In the followup story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the couple admitted that they hadn’t contacted the Post Office before installing the overpriced mailbox. Hmmm….could have avoided a lot of problems, instead of blaming the Post Office afterwards.

The spokeswoman for the post office who said it does not matter, in terms of efficiency and safety, which side of the street the box is on does not know what she is talking about. I does matter , to the postal service, which side of the street the box is on. If the carrier does not have to back track out of a sub division then all the boxes are suppose to go on the right side of the street. Also if the lots are under a certain size (approx 170 ft) then there should be a minimum of two boxes at the property line. This saves time for the carrier, not having to stop at every house . It also looks better in a subdivision with small lots.
