Baby boomers are top ‘junk mail’ target

Posted in junk mail, postal by brian on the August 29th, 2007

Press release from stopthejunkmail.com:

Consumers over the age of 65 are being targeted with the most junk mail according to stopthejunkmail.com’s 2007 second quarter survey. Results show that the over 40% of surveyed participants are over the age of 65 years old, the baby boomer demographic.

Stopthejunkmail.com releases their consumer opinion survey quarterly in an effort to determine how best to reduce the environmental impact of postal junk mail. The survey is taken anonymously by a nationwide sampling of consumers to accurately show attitudes toward stopping junk mail.

The survey also asks consumers what they believe are direct mail’s “worst offenders” with banks at the top of the list followed by catalogs. The top three cancelled catalogs during the last quarter were Frontgate, Ballard Designs and Home Decorators Collection.

Maybe buying ADVO wasn’t such a great idea?

Posted in ADVO, postal by brian on the August 23rd, 2007

The Wall Street Journal reports that Valassis, the company that bought ADVO earlier this year in a contentious takeover struggle, has lost half of its market value since the acquisition. While revenue for the combined company was up in the second quarter, profits were down 50%. More importantly from an investor’s point of view, the company had to lower its own earnings expectations, blaming the ‘unpredictability’ of ADVO’s business.

On August 6, Valassis shares hit their lowest price in a decade at $7.67. While the price has risen since then, closing yesterday at $10.28 (half of what it was worth a year ago), the Journal suggests investors aren’t holding their breath waiting for a full recovery: “There are plenty of investors betting the stock price will fall further, with more than 20% of Valassis’s float sold short.”
