Postal employee charged with embezzling funds

Press release:

United States Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan announced today, October 24, 2007, that a resident of Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of misappropriation of postal funds.

The one-count indictment named Barbara J. Ciglar, age 47.

According to the indictment, Ciglar, an officer and employee of the United States Postal Service, did knowingly embezzle $1,133.02 for her own use from November of 2004 until March of 2007.

Assistant United States Attorney Kay B. Lee, who presented the case to the grand jury, indicated that the law provides for a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000.00, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

The United States Postal Service/Office of Inspector General conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
