USPS upgrades plant that it wants to close

An editorial in the Lima OH News criticizes the US Postal Service for going ahead with improvements to its Lima Processing and Distribution Center, despite the fact that the USPS plans to close the facility.

We’d like to tell you we’re kidding, but it’s true. The Postal Service, which is studying shutting the Lima distribution and processing center, is actually now building a ramp at the Hanthorn Road building.

This would be the same distribution and procession center that Western Ohio District Manager Chu Falling Star wants to close to save $1.3 million by shifting its work to Toledo. So it only makes sense — if you work for the government — to do building improvements first. Don’t get your hopes up about the meaning of the work. TV station WLIO on Friday quoted a postal official as saying the work was scheduled, so with the uncertainty of the Lima center’s future, it went ahead.

The editorial concludes:

Regardless of whether you agree with… the Postal Service’s decision to close the Lima facility, you understand the need to save money. But, someone at these inefficient bureaucracies should figure out what a slap in the face it is to see money go into improving a facility for the sake of sitting empty.

It suggests the people trying to save money have no idea what they’re doing.

They have no idea what they are doing? Now how long did it take for you to figure that out? LOL

Your assumption that those in charge of the Postal Service are trying to save money is erroneous. They are (for their own interests) trying to waste money at every opportunity in an effort to financially cripple this organization beyond repair. I would challenge anybody, postal or otherwise, to refute that statement. L’Enfant Plaza wants to privitize us, and the only way they can get around the unions and government bureaucracy is to destroy us from within.
Within that framework, management hasn’t yet decided to close the Lima plant and move operations to Toledo, or vice versa. Lima has always had the more efficient operation. Management has always had a problem covering both their options and their own butts.

Do you know ANYTHING about contracting at that (gov) level? Went through this many times with military bases that were sceduled to be closed. The MONEY had already be approved, budgeted, and contracts awarded (a 5 year plan) and the winnng contractor was gonna get his money contract filled or not. I would bet this is the same thing with the USPS. Hey Congress, forget 5 day delivery, stop this kinda crap, and upper level bonuses. And give back the 75 Billion!!!

    Joe:

If you know anything about government contracting you should know that Contracting Officers can cancel contracts “for the convenience of the government”. The clause that allows this is written right in the contract.

Times that mistake by all the plants and you get a peek into why the Postal Service is imploding.
