USPS career staffing down by 8% compared with a year ago

Postal employment statistics filed yesterday show a decrease of 51,150 career employees compared with the same period last year, or -7.9%. The numbers are for pay period 5 in February, and fully reflect the impact of the voluntary early retirement offers that were made over the preceding year, as well as the normal seasonal spike in retirements that occurs near the beginning of the calendar year, which were not included in the end of year stats released in January.

The largest decline was in the clerk craft, which declined by 26,037, or -13.9%. City carriers, the largest employee group, declined by -4.9%, or 10,106 employees. Career rural carriers saw a much smaller decrease, -1.5%, or 1,054 employees. A significant number of rural carriers are part time, non-career employees, however, and that group saw its numbers drop by 4,586, or -8.7%. Mail handlers, the smallest craft, saw a decline of 4,530, or -8.4%.

Supervisor and manager staffing in the field dropped by 3,095, or -10%, while combined Headquarters/Area office staffing remained virtually unchanged.

1,800 EAS positions (supv/pm) that were posted late December will be filled by mid April, reducing that 10% reduction to about 4%…

When will all of the supervisor positions posted in January be filled? Are they being filled in your district? Not Ft. Worth…

What a surprise! Headquarters staff will grow, and the workers will shrink. Then they will demand more discipline and productivity while they abuse their travel cards, and trips.. don’t forget the bonuses!!!

What I think is interesting is the fact that our revenue has stayed almost the same, but our expenses keep going up. WHY??
I do believe that the USPS is looking to retire or do away with lots of employees via the “flat sorting machines”. These same machines require a “football field to where house them”. We keep buying and refurbishing buildings and purchasing new equipment, when the volume of flats is not going to be there to justify their use/purchase. How many billions of dollars could we be saving????

PS: this report is nothing new. The reality is; we will have to do more with less clerks (the backbone of our organization) which means that the carriers will start later in the day and our customers (our primary purpose) will get their mail even later in the day. :( ! OUCH…

I doubt if clerks are the backbone of the organization. Everyone is the backbone (except management).

Yeah, get rid of a few more clerks…………our supervisors are doing clerk work every morning just to get us out the door, and we still have “Waiting For Mail” time 2-3 days a week. Hey, I don’t mind standing around while I am on the clock. They know what they are doing,………………..
