FEMA finally gets around to disbursing ‘Heroes’ stamp proceeds

According to a story in the January 22 Linn’s Stamp News, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has “finally begun to disburse the more than $8 million that was raised by sales of the… Heroes of 2001 semipostal stamp.” It has been over two years since the stamps were last sold. According to Linn’s Washington correspondent Bill McAllister, New York Rep. Gary Ackerman, who announced the start of payments last month, said ”… the FEMA process was more cumbersome and took longer than I would have liked…”

What a surprise! 

9/11: Church Street station

Here’s a piece I wish I had seen yesterday from the Stamp Collecting Round-Up blog. The  National Postal Museum’s online exhibit, mentioned in the story, is a surprisingly moving experience- especially seeing the bullseye canceller with the date “SEP 11 2001″, followed by the “UNKNOWN: RETURN TO SENDER” stamp from “NEW YORK, NY 10048″.
